Not Hold’em, Still Poker

Poker

At the moment, the most prominent types of poker games are Texas Hold’em, with Omaha Hold’em coming up behind. Some poker players believe that Texas Hold’em has been near-exhausted as a poker game that players can still develop and grow in, and that Omaha Hold’em is growing to replace Texas. But there are many other kinds of poker game, many of which deserve just as much attention as these two more prominent types of poker game.

Five card draw used to be the most popular form of poker game, before Texas Hold’em came along. Hold’em offered a simple system to learn, and ample room for strategy and excitement; but five card draw offers these things as well, if only in different ways. Essentially, five card draw allows for a round of exchanging cards in between rounds of betting. This one round of exchanging cards is the primary feature of five card draw, which otherwise involves each player having a full hand of five cards, and simply determining the best possible combination at the end of each round. It is a very difficult poker game to earn very strong hands with, as the number of cards for the overall group is significantly reduced. Since each player has his own hand in this poker game, there is more of a chance that the card you most need to draw is in someone else’s hand. This game is still one of the simpler forms of poker game in existence, and is a good way to start learning the game.

Seven card stud is another prominent of poker game, this one obviously involving more cards than five card draw. In seven card stud, each player gets three cards, two face down and one face up. There is a round of betting, then every player is dealt another card face-up. This continues, with another round of betting and another face-up card being dealt to each player, until every player is up to seven cards. Then a final round of betting commences, and players assemble the best five card hand possible out of the cards dealt to them. This particular poker game variant is interesting because of how much information it reveals to all the other players. While it is true that players have a similar level of information in Texas Hold’em, the fact that in this particular poker game, each player has his own set of cards, makes it much more focused on what cards opponents have face up in front of them, and guessing what cards they might have face down. Again, like in five card draw, the presence of so many cards being drawn out of the deck means that the likelihood of drawing exactly the card you need is somewhat decreased, as it may be in front of another player. The advantage here, of course, is that if the card you need is in front of another player, you’ll be aware of it unless it’s a face down card. The strategies involved in this particular poker game are interestingly different from those of Texas and Omaha Hold’em, giving this poker game its own unique status.

There are many other variants of poker game out there, and it’s up to you to find the variant that you like the best, but chances are that there will be one or more which fully appeal to you, to your likes and dislikes in strategy and in poker. Keep trying until you find the poker game for you.
