Poker

At the moment, the most prominent types of poker games are Texas Hold’em, with Omaha Hold’em coming up behind. Some poker players believe that Texas Hold’em has been near-exhausted as a poker game that players can still develop and grow in, and that Omaha Hold’em is growing to replace Texas. But there are many other kinds of poker game, many of which deserve just as much attention as these two more prominent types of poker game.

Five card draw used to be the most popular form of poker game, before Texas Hold’em came along. Hold’em offered a simple system to learn, and ample room for strategy and excitement; but five card draw offers these things as well, if only in different ways. Essentially, five card draw allows for a round of exchanging cards in between rounds of betting. This one round of exchanging cards is the primary feature of five card draw, which otherwise involves each player having a full hand of five cards, and simply determining the best possible combination at the end of each round. It is a very difficult poker game to earn very strong hands with, as the number of cards for the overall group is significantly reduced. Since each player has his own hand in this poker game, there is more of a chance that the card you most need to draw is in someone else’s hand. This game is still one of the simpler forms of poker game in existence, and is a good way to start learning the game.

Seven card stud is another prominent of poker game, this one obviously involving more cards than five card draw. In seven card stud, each player gets three cards, two face down and one face up. There is a round of betting, then every player is dealt another card face-up. This continues, with another round of betting and another face-up card being dealt to each player, until every player is up to seven cards. Then a final round of betting commences, and players assemble the best five card hand possible out of the cards dealt to them. This particular poker game variant is interesting because of how much information it reveals to all the other players. While it is true that players have a similar level of information in Texas Hold’em, the fact that in this particular poker game, each player has his own set of cards, makes it much more focused on what cards opponents have face up in front of them, and guessing what cards they might have face down. Again, like in five card draw, the presence of so many cards being drawn out of the deck means that the likelihood of drawing exactly the card you need is somewhat decreased, as it may be in front of another player. The advantage here, of course, is that if the card you need is in front of another player, you’ll be aware of it unless it’s a face down card. The strategies involved in this particular poker game are interestingly different from those of Texas and Omaha Hold’em, giving this poker game its own unique status.

There are many other variants of poker game out there, and it’s up to you to find the variant that you like the best, but chances are that there will be one or more which fully appeal to you, to your likes and dislikes in strategy and in poker. Keep trying until you find the poker game for you.

Poker strategy is a very complex and nuanced thing, as it must take into account elements of psychology alongside elements of mathematics and probability. But there is a fundamental theorem of poker, articulated by David Sklansky, that serves as the basis for a lot of important poker strategies. This theorem is stated as follows: “Every time you play a hand differently from the way you would have played it if you could see all your opponents’ cards, they gain; and every time you play your hand the same way you would have played it if you could see all their cards, they lose.” The converse is also true, according to this theorem of poker strategy.

This theorem, while stated as something that seems somewhat obvious and factual, is actually an expression of a mathematical element in poker strategy. If you, as a poker player, could successfully see every single one of your opponents’ cards, then your poker strategies would be perfect. You would never fail to implement the correct strategy in any given situation. But, of course, in an actual game, you cannot see your opponents’ cards, and thus your poker strategies are more prone to failure, or mistakes, as the theorem describes them. All you can do is make the best possible decision based on the information available, but the key is to control the available information, such that your own poker strategy will lead to gains for you, and your opponent’s poker strategies will lead to losses for him or her.

The best way to explain how this theorem affects poker strategy is with the simple example of bluffing. By bluffing and pretending that you have better cards than you actually do, you are adjusting the information available to your opponent. If your opponent could see your cards, then he would know better than to change his poker strategy based on your bluffing, but as he cannot see your cards, he can only respond to your actions. Thus, you would have forced your opponent to act differently than he would have, had he been able to see your cards, and as a result, you gain, and your opponent loses.

In essence, this fundamental theorem of poker implies that players should adopt poker strategies that seek to force their opponents to fault, in a fashion similar to tennis. The objective is not necessarily to simply beat the opponent outright, but is instead to trick the opponent into making consistent enough mistakes that the opponent loses. Poker strategies should reflect this implicit idea, that perhaps the most important way to the play the game is not with a focus on your own play, but with a focus on the play of your opponents. Watching your opponents, focusing on what their own particular strategies and styles of play seem to be, and so on will serve you very well in determining what the correct course of action in any given situation is, both in terms of your reaction to them, and in terms of how best to mislead your opponent.

If you’re looking for a good way to learn how to play poker, then there’s never been a better time. The plethora of websites devoted to the topic all over the Internet will likely provide more than enough information to teach you all of the poker rules you’ll need to get started. But some sites can be better than others, even if for no other reason than that they offer more information than just the most basic rules of poker. A site that can offer up all the most basic information of how to play poker, and then offer a few important tidbits of beginning poker strategy, is ideal for the new poker player.

PlayWinningPoker.com
This site, while not terribly attractive, is chock full of information on poker rules of all kinds, and the most important basic strategies for their effective use. It includes one article, which is specifically focused on the basic rules issues of how to play poker, among other articles dealing with important elements of almost every poker variation you could imagine. The site is somewhat hard to navigate, but that’s only because of the tremendous amount of information that it offers up. If you’re looking for a solid, comprehensive resource on poker rules and strategy, then playwinningpoker.com is the place to go.

Pokersyte.com
This website features a more easily accessible format than that of playwinningpoker.com, while also featuring an ample amount of information for the poker rules learner. The site covers some of the most basic types of poker played, including Texas Hold’em, Omaha Hold’em, Omaha High/Low, Seven Card Stud, and Five Card Stud. For each of these variants, pokersyte.com offers up information on how to play that variant, and what the most basic winning strategies are for that variant. Beyond that, the website includes such resources as a glossary of poker terms, a description of poker basics, and even articles on specific elements of poker strategy, ensuring that a reader knows not only how to play poker, but also how to win.

Poker.about.com
As a subsection of about.com, you can rest assured that this website features a large amount of basic information on poker, including ample sections on how to play poker and poker rules. A number of topics are prominently displayed, including “Poker 101 – Poker Rules,” “Beginning Poker Strategy,” and “Advanced Strategy.” The site also features a number of poker TV shows and movies, as well as quizzes and other fun tidbits. It also holds information from “Toby’s Poker Blog,” a consistently updated source of poker information that would likely prove very useful for any aspiring poker player, regardless of whether or not he or she knows how to play poker yet.

There are ample other website from which to find information on how to play poker, from the most basic elements to the more important strategies, but beware of websites that ask for credit card information, or require sign-ins. Information is easily available for free at any number of websites, and it is good and valuable information on how to play poker. You most certainly do not need to spend any money on trying to receive similar information from another website. Whatever website you choose to resort to, though, have a good time learning all about poker rules.

With the dangers of online poker addiction being more apparent than ever before, one must be careful about approaching any free poker online. These free poker games can often act simply as a gateway drug to playing fully paid poker, and can lead you down a path you never meant to tread. Nevertheless, however, if you can keep yourself playing simply free poker, with only play tokens, and without any paid money, then you can still take advantage of this enjoyable game, without falling prey to its darker side.

As simple of a site as it is, freepoker.org appears to be one of the safest possible sites for finding good, free poker online. The website provides access to a host of different online services, each of which offers a different variant of poker, but none of which forces you to put in any amount of money, or even give the game any of your credit card information. There is no chance that this free poker could become paid poker, though you could easily find paid poker at another site. But the chance that you can easily switch from one to the other at the same site is part of the danger of a supposedly free poker site like PokerStars.net, so you’re much more likely to keep any potential online addiction to poker in check with utterly free poker online from freepoker.org.

There are disadvantages to free poker online, of course, as has been pointed out by expert poker players. The primary disadvantage is that the game is fundamentally different because real money is not on the line. Poker with money involves a great deal more care on the part of the participating players, as opposed to free poker online, in which players can afford to be significantly more reckless with the play money of the game, because it is entirely false. All players need to do to replenish their play money is to start a new game of free poker, which gives a certain amount of detachment from the normal procedures of poker play. Furthermore, because of the recklessness that can be bred by playing a great deal of free poker online, it often becomes more dangerous for a given player to move from playing free poker to playing paid poker, more so than it would be if that player were to have gone directly into playing paid poker. In terms of the functioning of actual poker games, free poker teaches a poor set of skills.

But therein lies perhaps the most importance difference to understand, and the reason why most individuals will be better off playing free poker online than playing paid poker. Free poker is about an entertaining game; it’s about enjoyment, and it’s about having a good time. Paid poker is about success, winning, earning back everything you bet and more. Paid poker has to be about the money you make, more than it is about any sense of enjoyment or fulfillment you get from the game; such a greed-based foundation to the game is inherently a sign to be cautious. Free poker online, for all that it bears many similarities to paid poker, is without that rather dangerous foundation, and is therefore inherently safer.

Online poker addiction is a serious risk to the health and mental stability of the youth of today’s world. Not only can online poker addiction cause major problems for a person’s life by leading to social isolation and monetary difficulties, but it can also have very unpleasant effects on the health of the addict, simply because the addict no longer cares enough to take care of him or herself. Online poker addiction is not a simple problem that can be solved merely by explaining its dangers to the addict, though that is a first step in the right direction.

Health based side effects of online poker addiction can include the inability to eat, and constant uneasiness. Playing so much online poker can cause you a tremendous amount of stress, from the constant focus and worry about each individual online poker game, as well as from the bills that accrue, and from other concerns of life as they stack up, unaddressed, because so much time is being spent on online poker. The effects of online poker addiction can also be additive, in that you become more addicted as your life becomes worse, which then in turn makes your life worse, so that you become more addicted. As your real life looks less and less appealing, you turn more and more to the escapism provided by online poker games.

Online poker addiction becomes even more dangerous from a simple perspective of losing tremendous amounts of time to the game. Each game slips by with incredible speed, keeping an online poker player wrapped up for hours on end. Furthermore, even in the time when an online poker player isn’t playing, he or she is likely to still be thinking about the game, dwelling on it, wondering how to improve, what he or she could have done differently. An online poker addict’s thoughts dwell on his or her mistakes and losses, and he or she beats him or herself up endlessly in an attempt to figure out what to differently, what to do to ensure that this time he or she wins.

There are many individuals who will be fully capable of playing online poker without suffering the debilitating effects of addiction. There may even be a great number of people who do play in a perfectly healthy fashion. They likely lose some money on the game, but as long as they hold themselves in check, online poker will only be an entertaining way to spend an hour or two, and not a major problem. But for enough individuals, online poker allows them to tap a part of their personalities that might otherwise have remained submerged, because of a lack of access to such fonts of gambling. In this world, we must all be on our lookout for signs and behaviors that might indicate a friend or loved one becoming addicted to such negative activities, and we must ourselves be wary, lest we be pulled into such an unhealthy, addictive set of behaviors.

The World Series of Poker features one tournament as its main event: a $10,000 buy-in no limit Texas Hold’em tournament. The first such poker tournament was held in 1970, in Las Vegas, when Benny Binion invited some of the best poker players in the world to compete with one another at the Horseshoe Casino. In 1982, the poker tournament had grown to 52 participants, instead of the original six. In 1987, that number had again grown to 2,100 poker players entering the tournament. In 2006, the highest recorded number of poker players entered the poker tournament, with a total of 8,773 players participating. The winner of every single World Series of Poker tournament from 1976 on has received a bracelet, which signifies the poker player’s success and skill. These bracelets are the most important trophies in all of professional poker playing.

It’s hard to believe that poker rose to such prominent heights so quickly. Poker has been a well-known game for a long time, and people were easily playing it for fun or money throughout the 20th century. Casinos likely incorporated it into their workings early on. But the idea of professional poker players and professional poker tournaments would likely have seemed genuinely strange in 1970, to people who weren’t used to the idea of watching poker on television the same way they might watch football, or basketball. Indeed, the original poker tournaments that were featured in the World Series of Poker sound closer to small exhibition matches, designed to feature a casino more than the players themselves, and definitely more than the game of poker.

But now, poker can be found on numerous TV channels. Cameras zoom in on the stoically empty faces of hot-shot poker pros, as they peek at the underside of their cards, and then casually toss those cards away in a fold. Poker has been glamorized in a way that early poker players would likely never have expected. Part of this, of course, can be attributed to the tremendous monetary success of those poker players who do quite well at tournaments. With prizes of millions of dollars, it’s hard not to glamorize poker players who earn those prizes by outwitting their competition. Beyond this, there’s always been something glamorous, something roguishly charming in the clever, deceptive poker player, who gambles everything and comes out ahead. People love risk, and they love it especially when risk pays off; no game better exemplifies this kind of behavior than poker.

Where will poker go in the future? After all, poker tournaments are now regularly broadcast, and prominent poker players can often be recognized on the street with ease. Will poker players simply keep growing in fame, until they’re as widely known as football players or basketball players? It seems somewhat unlikely, but as America moves more and more towards digitalization, and as the Internet becomes more and more important, it’s possible that games that can be broadcast easily and played easily on the Internet will earn more attention than more traditional games. In other words, the future of poker in an Internet age looks quite bright indeed.
